Implementation of the method of semen collection and collared peccary ( Tayassu tajacu) andrologic standardization

The collared peccary ( Tayassu tajacu) are rustic and gregarious animals who provide meat and leather of excellent quality, being thus an important source of protein especially to the subsistence of the Amazon's needy population. The use of this animal is, however, being done without planned hunting, being thus associated with the destruction of their natural habitat and, consequently, the loss of these resources, which are scarcely known.

In this context, the market oriented captive-breeding of these animals, as well as their use in reproductive biotechnology with the intent to improve their captive breeding, are extremely necessary. However, the semen collection of the collared peccary remains a critical topic, making it difficult to make their genetic material available.

This project aims, therefore, to test and evaluate methods of semen collection in captive-bred animals, kept at the Senator Álvaro Adolfo Animal Research Unit, located at Embrapa Eastern Amazon, in Belém - PA, where the collection, analysis and processing of the samples will be done.
