Project Saltus - greenhouse gas emissions and carbon storage in natural and plantedforests: silvicultural practices for mitigating and adapting to climate change

The effects of climate change can negatively affect productivity in agricultural and forest crops,and lead to a loss of biological diversity in tropical forests. On the other hand, forests areknown to be important in removing and storing carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the soil and biomass,consume methane (CH 4 ), and have low emissions of nitrous oxide (N 2 O). Forests help regulatethe climate, provide ecosystem services, and are also related to the commitments contained inthe Paris Agreement, an international accord to combat climate change. The objective of thisproject is to identify and measure the potential of silvicultural practices in increasing carbonstorage and removing greenhouse gases (GHG) in homogeneous plantations of eucalyptus andpine, in integrated and mixed systems involving livestock, agriculture, and forests, and also inremnants of native forests and even urban environments as strategies to mitigate climatechange. Forest management systems such as mixed plantings, waste management, fertilizing,planting density, and genetic diversity of pine and eucalyptus will be evaluated in order todetermine measures for adaptation and mitigation. The data collection methods will be basedon recognized experimental protocols that were already adjusted during phase 1 of ProjectSaltus. The data generated by the component projects will be integrated into the SaltusDatabase (https://www.saltus-rep.cnptia.embrapa.br/). The objective is to update and/ordevelop emissions factors, coefficients, and/or technical and scientific indicators related toemissions and GHG removal in forest systems and required to carry out the main publicpolicies encouraging control of climate change in the country. The research network iscomprised of Embrapa units and partnerships with academic institutions and forest-basedcompanies.
