Sustainability assessment of dairy farms that adopt the Balde Cheio (Full Bucket) project

The sustainability of rural properties consists of the dynamic balance of social, economic, environmental and management administration dimensions. For the evaluation of sustainability, considering this balance and involving such dimensions. For the assessment of sustainability, considering this balance and involving such dimensions, it is necessary the identification of sets of representative indicators. Besides representing the corresponding dimensions, the sustainability indicators are related to each other, demonstrating the interactions and dynamics of the studied system. The Balde Cheio (Full Bucket) project consists of the continuous training of technicians using a familiar dairy property as a "practical classroom", where technologies and actions are debated and adapted to the particular situation of that property and, finally, implemented. In turn, several tools have been developed for assessing the sustainability of rural properties using specific sets of indicators. However, due to the profusion of existing tools, it is necessary to identify the one that yields the best results to ground decision making of farmers and technicians using the Balde Cheio methodology. Also, since some of those tools were developed with parameters and goals related to other countries, there is a need to adapt the former to the realities of the rural properties under study. Therefore, this project aims to evaluate the sustainability of rural properties that adopt the Balde Cheio methodology, considering the interaction of social, economic, environmental and administration management dimensions. For this, the following actions are under way: evaluation of the socio-economic and technological profile of the producers, comparison and analysis of four available sustainability assessment tools (RISE, SAFA, Apoia-Novo Rural and ISA, respectively), and the identification of those which contribute to the sustainable promotion of rural properties. To carry out this work, a set of quantitative and qualitative methodologies is used, from the collection of data and information, to the analytical framework and the use of the results. The evaluation of the socio-economic and technological profile of the farmers is done by means of spreadsheets that evaluate the index of technological update (IAT) of the rural properties. With the use of previously selected analytical criteria, such as the ease of application with the farmer, the usability of the tool by the focal point / technician, ease of obtaining the indicators in the properties, detected needs for adaptation, interpretation of the results and definition of the interventions according to the results , the most appropriate tool for the project will be identified. Based on this and other criteria, it will be possible to identify the most appropriate tool for the Balde Cheio methodology, proposing adaptations and adjustments according to the reality found and the analyzes performed. Subsequently, the technicians participating in the Balde Cheio methodology will be trained and will apply the tool to a larger number of rural properties. Next, a matrix will be elaborated comparing the technological profiles of the properties and the corresponding evaluations of the sustainability in order to identify the groups with more sustainable technological profiles. The technologies identified in these groups will be selected, as well as the properties that use them. The results will guide the recommendation of the technologies that contribute most to the sustainability of rural properties.
