Development of pre and postharvet technologies to reduce pesticides residues in papaya

The reduced volume of papaya exports is the result of a number of limiting logistical factors, such as the absence of post-harvest technologies that allow export via maritime modal (which would increase the competitiveness of the Brazilian fruit due to reduced costs.) The excessive use of pesticides leading to the presence of residues in fruits has also been an important restriction imposed by the foreign market, a scenario which will soon also be a reality of the domestic market, considering consumers' growing awareness of the importance of healthy foods. Depreciation of fruit quality is a result of the incidence of postharvest diseases, but in most cases the diseases are due to contamination of fruits by pathogen inocula still in the field. In this context, the purpose of this proposal is to determine the influence of current postharvest procedures on papaya pesticide residues and to reduce pesticide residues on fruits by the use of low risk pre and postharvest technologies on human health.
