The aim of this project was to strengthen the SUSTRURAL array - a set of Embrapa projects related to environmental rehabilitation and compliance in the rural landscape of the Atlantic Rainforest in Southern and Southeastern Brazil - based on deeper integration and training of component members.
SUSTRURAL was created to study solutions to the problems experienced by the rural landscape of the Atlantic Rainforest, which is characterized by the prevalence of fragmented forest ecosystems, parti ...

The overall objective of this project was to strengthen Brazil’s green economy by harmonizing economic development and environmental conservation through sustainable agriculture that does not harm the environment, using soil and plant biomass management in organic production systems as a starting point. Unlike many agricultural production systems, organic agriculture offers a range of practices and techniques that potentially contribute to increase sustainability, including soil and plant biomas

The objective of this project is to select essential oils that have the potential for sanitary treatment in organic soybean production systems without interference in seed germination and are concomitantly compatible with the Bradyrhizobium bacteria, used to promote Biological Nitrogen Fixation (BNF) in the crop.
The intention is to develop an efficient bioproduct that can be utilized by organic soybean farmers, which could work on the phytosanitary problems that hit the seeds, as i ...

Cowpeas, peanuts and bambara groundnuts ( Vigna subterranea) are important pulses or dry grain legumes in the West of Africa; hence low cost technologies that increase their productivity could entail major nutritional and social impacts. Field experiments conducted in Ghana, in Africa, have shown 40% to 100% increments to production, after the use of rhizobium inoculants supplied by Embrapa.
In light of the above, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research's Savanna Agricultu ...

Northern Ghana is the most important region of this African country for the production of cereals and legumes, but the soils are degraded and lack nitrogen and phosphorus, basic nutrients for the growth of such crops. Previous projects therein had proven that the use of quality inoculants can improve nodulation and increase grain production by 30% to 50%. This project aimed to effectively increase the yields of cowpeas, peanuts and soybeans for smallholders in the region, based on the use of loc

Sugarcane is one of the pillars of the Brazilian agricultural economy. Productivity gains combined with an industrial activity developed for use in the sugar and ethanol production have led researchers to seek agroindustrial management strategies to reduce costs. This project proposes the application of diazotrophic bacteria as a biological input to fully or partially meet sugarcane's nutritional needs with regard to nitrogen.
For that purpose, it counts on Embrapa Agrobiology's experience ...

Agriculture is responsible for about 30% of the Brazilian Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and some of the challenges of the sector include: reducing production costs, increasing productivity and minimizing environmental impacts. In this scenario, the adoption of inoculants based on the process of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is quite welcome, once it is the only natural biological process of obtaining nitrogen, in contrast with the use of nitrogen fertilizers that release about a ton of gree

The strengthening of Embrapa's Low Carbon Brazilian Beef brand is the goal of this project, through the consolidation of a process of permanent mitigation of greenhouse gases (GHG) in pastures. The intent is to replace the use of nitrogen fertilizers, whose production entails high GHG emissions, by intercropping pastures with forage legumes that add nitrogen to the system via biological fixation of atmospheric nitrogen. In addition, the presence of legumes increases the pasture's protein supply,

One of the bottlenecks for the expansion of organic agriculture is the lack of nitrogen. A system that annually exports large amount of such nutrient with product harvests needs a continuous supply of the element to keep the system productive. However, organic production in Brazil cannot use nitrogen from synthetic sources, according to Law 10831, from 2003. Thus, green manure with the use of atmospheric nitrogen fixing legumes is a strategy for organic farmers.
However, generally speaking, ...

Given the serious agricultural losses suffered by the highland region of the state of Rio de Janeiro due to heavy rainfall in January 2011, this projects aimed at transferring agroecological technologies that have been already developed and adapted to the region through cooperative methodologies that foster interaction between researchers and farmers. It was expected to contribute to counter the environmental and economic risk scenario afflicting family farming in the region; diversify productio
