Embrapa's 51st anniversary celebrations included the launch of the book “ICLF: a portrait of sustainable production in Brazil”. The publication is authored by journalists Gabriel Faria (Embrapa Agrosilvopastoral) and José Heitor Vasconcellos (Embrapa Maize and Sorghum) and offers a collection of pictures that show the diversity posed by the use of integrated crop-livestock-forestry systems (ICLFS) across the country.

The book is bilingual, in Portuguese and English. It was produced using the images from Embrapa's Multimedia Bank and with photos that were nominated for the two editions of the ICLF Network Photography Award, which were promoted by the ICLFS Network Association in 2022 and 2023. They added up to a total of 121 images that portray integrated crop-livestock (ICL), crop-forestry (ICF), livestock-forestry (ILF) and integrated crop-livestock-forestry (ICLF) systems all over Brazil.

The pictures were taken by 35 photographers, most of whom are amateurs and often using a cell phone. Such photographers include Embrapa analysts, technicians, assistants and researchers, who experience the daily routines of research on such production systems, as well as rural technicians, students and farmers.

The scenes chosen for the book depict benefits for the soil, crop rotation, animal welfare, diversification, the use of trees in production systems, research and technology transfer activities, and the day-t-day field labor with agricultural operations and herd management.

The publication is part of ICLFS communication and dissemination activities promoted by Embrapa and aims at illustrating the benefits of those systems, the diversity in the use of the technology and how it is expanding to other different Brazilian regions.

The text within the book introduces ICLFS and contextualizes their importance in light of the Brazilian strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural production.

The initial print run of the book is 1,000 copies and it will not be sold. Its digital version is already available for free download on Embrapa's web portal.
